H4 to F1 Visa Conversion Procedure

This post is very useful for those who are in US and who want to convert to F1 visa from H4. You need to plan for it atleast 3 to 6 months before applying for F1 as you need financial statement/bank balance or properties in India to support your education.

Following are the main documents that you have to work on as you have to get these documents from outside exclusively for this process ...

  1. Maintain and get bank balance required by the university and get the official bank statement for 3 to 6 months from bank
  2. Get the Sevis form from your college
  3. Pay SEVIS fee 200$s @ https://www.fmjfee.com/i901fee/ and get the receipt
  4. Get the check or Money Order for 300$s on "U.S. Department of Homeland Security"
  5. Fill form I-539 online and have a print out of it and sign on it
  6. Get your Spouse's employment letter

There are few other documents required for this process and I guess everybody will have those by default.

Final list of documents from your side ...

  1. Cover letter
  2. Original International Technological University SEVIS Form
  3. Photocopy of I-901 SEVIS fee payment
  4. Photocopy of Form I-94
  5. Photocopy of current immigration status documents, visa stamp, and passport ID pages
  6. Bank statements indicating that you have enough funds (as stated by the university) to complete the courses
  7. Photocopy of Driver’s license (optional)
  8. Photocopy of Health Insurance
  9. Copy of marriage certificate
  10. A completed Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status)
  11. A check made out to "DHS" for $300

Photocopy of following spouse's documents

  1. Current immigration status document I-797A
  2. Form I-94
  3. Visa stamp
  4. Passport ID pages
  5. Paystubs of last 3 months
  6. Employment letter stating current salary and job position

  1. Is spouse Affidavit of support, currency exchange rate(If it's India Bank account ) not required?

  2. Hi Is the Bank Statement should shows funds available for latest 90 days or 3 months? Can I amount be deposited in the Spouse account itself??
